The Best Time of the Year to Travel to Kilimanjaro

What’s the best time of the year to travel to Kilimanjaro?Although, hiking conditions can be more pleasant in some months than others, Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round.

In the months from December to March, rainfall is lower and therefore, temperatures are warmer than in the summer months. However, for some this might just be the right time to embark on a tour to the Kilimanjaro, as in that period, there are fewer other tourists on the trails and you can enjoy the enchanting surroundings at your leisure. Of course, it all depends on what you want to experience and wether you would enjoy rainfall during your climb.

1. Temperature

The temperature on Kilimanjaro is relatively constant throughout the year. Nevertheless, there are temperature differences of up to 5 °C on average between individual months. Thus, the months of January to March tend to be somewhat warmer, with an average temperature of about 25 °C. Meanwhile, the months of June to August are comparatively fresh, with average temperatures of about 20 °C. However, as soon as you ascend to higher regions the air cools down considerably.

2. Precipitation

Tanzania has two rainy seasons per year. The big rainy season starts around mid-to-late March and lasts to the end of May. The small rainy season is between the end of October and the beginning-to-mid  December. As already mentioned, Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year round. However, you should expect a different hiking experience in the rainy season, as it can easily rain for half a day and visibility can be poor.

3. Visitors

The number of visitors varies from month to month. During the two rainy seasons, you will probably cross paths with fewer adventurers. July to October is the main season for trekkers and accordingly, Kilimanjaro is well visited during that time.  Finally, the number of visitors also depends on your choice of route. Some routes are easier or just more pouplar in general and therefore, better visited than others.
