Planning

The optimal time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro falls during the dry seasons, from December to early March and from June to October. December through March offers warm conditions and clear visibility but tends to be busier. June to October is cooler, yet provides excellent visibility and is also a popular period. The rainy seasons, from mid-March to May and November to early December, are less crowded but can make the climb challenging due to muddy and slippery trails. Your choice should be based on personal preferences: while the dry seasons offer safer and more pleasant climbing conditions, the rainy seasons allow for a quieter experience with lush landscapes and potentially lower costs. Regardless of the season, thorough preparation is key to a successful ascent.

More about the best time to climb Kilimanjaro you will find in the following blog: The Best Time of The Year to Travel to Kilimanjaro

Your personal preferences determine the perfect time for a safari. The months from June to October and from January to March are ideal for wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources. These periods promise sunny days, though with higher visitor numbers during the Great Migration and the birthing times of zebras and wildebeests. The rainy seasons from April to May and November to December feature lush landscapes, fewer tourists, and potential discounts. For a balanced experience with fewer crowds and pleasant weather, the transition periods at the end of March, early June, late October, and November are particularly suitable.

For a comprehensive exploration of Tanzania’s spectacular landscapes such as the Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, and Tarangire National Park, we recommend a duration of 5 to 7 days. This time allows you to experience the diversity of the northern safari circuit, including observing the “Big Five”. Those with more time can look forward to longer adventures of over 20 days. Short trips of 1 to 2 days are suitable for Arusha National Park, supplemented by Tarangire or Lake Manyara National Park if time is limited. A direct flight to the Serengeti is an effective option for visitors with limited time.

Your personal preferences determine the perfect time for a safari. The months from June to October and from January to March are ideal for wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources. These periods promise sunny days, though with higher visitor numbers during the Great Migration and the birthing times of zebras and wildebeests. The Great Migration is a breathtaking natural spectacle where over a million wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles roam the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. This phenomenon starts with the calving phase in the southern Serengeti, near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, traverses the Serengeti to the Masai Mara in Kenya, and returns by the end of the year. Particularly impressive is the crossing of the Mara River, where animals face not only strong currents but also predators.

The Great Migration offers unique natural spectacles throughout the year. Particularly noteworthy are the months of February and March for calving and May to August for spectacular river crossings. From August to October, the animals move further into the Masai Mara.

Kilimanjaro International Airport serves as the main entry point for the northern national parks such as the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, located near Mount Kilimanjaro. For the southern parks such as Selous and Ruaha, Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar Es Salaam is the preferred point of entry.

For your safari, we recommend clothing in neutral colors such as khaki or gray to blend into the environment and conceal dust. Avoid white or blue clothing as blue attracts tsetse flies, and camouflage clothing as it is not allowed in civilian areas. Comfortable shoes for safari drives, a warm jacket for cooler evenings, and sun protection are essential.

Leaving the vehicle is only allowed in designated areas. For safety reasons, it is not permitted to leave the vehicle in the middle of the parks.

The use of drones is not allowed for regular visitors in Tanzania’s national parks without special permission. For filming purposes, permits can be requested, which may take several months to be issued.

Wi-Fi is available in our safari vehicles, although the connection may be limited in remote areas. Wi-Fi is also available in lodges and hotels, although the connection may fluctuate at times.

Kilimanjaro Trekking

The Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain and the world’s largest free-standing mountain, rises majestically 5,895 meters above sea level. It boasts a breathtaking diversity of five climate zones, ranging from tropical rainforests to arctic tundra. Tanzaniatrail allows you to discover this diversity on guided Kilimanjaro tours that require no special technical climbing skills.

Standing at an impressive height of 5,895 meters, Kilimanjaro is known as the “Roof of Africa.” The Kilimanjaro climb with Tanzaniatrail guarantees an unforgettable adventure to the Uhuru Peak summit, accompanied by experienced guides.

Tanzaniatrail presents various routes for Kilimanjaro trekking, including the popular Machame and Lemosho routes as well as the traditional Marangu route. We also offer all other routes such as Rongai Route, Northen Circuit, Shira Route and Umbwe Route. Each route promises a unique experience with spectacular landscapes and challenges.

The best time to climb Kilimanjaro is during the dry seasons, which run from late June to October and from mid-December to mid-March. These periods offer the most favorable conditions for trekkers: clear visibility, less precipitation, and generally more stable weather conditions.

June to October is particularly popular, as these months coincide with the great migration in the Serengeti, allowing travelers the opportunity to combine a Kilimanjaro trek with a safari. The period from December to March is slightly warmer and also provides good conditions for climbing, though there can be a chance of rain towards the end of March at the start of the rainy season.

Although Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, the rainy seasons in April, May, and November are less ideal. During these months, the paths can be slippery and visibility may be limited by clouds and fog. However, these months have the advantage of fewer visitors, offering a more peaceful experience.
